   Proposal Description:
   TBI is a known risk factor for AD. Very little research has been done on how history of TBI affects the transition to MCI and AD or whether history of TBI affects the rate of cognitive decline after diagnosis. We aim to bridge this knowledge gap, by investigating the effects of TBI on cognition and its    progression in all cognitive states (normal, pre-dementia and dementia)                                                                                                                                                                               Aim 1: To determine the effect of TBI on the rate of cognitive decline among MCI pre-AD and demetia patients. We propose to focus on two NACC subsamples a) NACC participants that are diagnosed with MCI and b) a) NACC participants that are diagnosed with dementia. Along with covariates known to affect the rate of decline such as sex, age, education, we will tests whether history of TBI affects the rate of cognitive decline measured by the NACC neuropsychiatric battery. Hypothesis 1: We hypothesize that history of TBI increases the rate of cognitive decline among MCI and AD patients.                                                                                                                                          Aim 2: To determine the effect of TBI on cognition among normal controls. We propose to focus on the NACC participants with normal cognition. Along with covariates known to affect the scores of the neuropsychological tests such as sex, age, education, we will tests whether history of TBI is negatively         associated with cognition measured by the NACC neuropsychological battery. Hypothesis 1: We hypothesize that history of TBI is negatively correlated with scores of the neuropsychological battery, especially those associated with attention, psychomotor speed and executive function.
